What is euthanasia in pets?

Euthanasia is the medical term for putting your pet to sleep or putting them down. It is a gentle procedure that doesn’t cause any pain and takes a matter of minutes to complete. During euthanasia your pet is given a sedative to keep them calm, then the medication to end their life is administered. Euthanasia is only recommended by veterinarians when the quality of life in your pet is extremely low and they are no longer responsive to treatments to manage their condition.

When should I consider euthanasia for my pet?

Euthanasia is only recommended by a veterinarian based on your pet’s medical condition and based on their behaviours that you’ve noticed at home. Living with your pet you begin to pick up on the changes in their attitude as their health declines. Little things such as being less playful or eating less may show that your pet is becoming less of themselves. Some of these signs may be treated but there is no guarantee their comfort or attitude may improve. Euthanasia becomes an option when all attempts the treat your pet’s symptoms have failed. To discuss your pet’s condition call us at 613-433-3100.

Can I stay with my pet while they are euthanized?

Absolutely! Owners are given the opportunity to be with their cherished pets during their final moments. The grieving process will be very difficult for the family. We encourage our clients to express their feelings with our team or even join support groups to reflect on their beloved pet companion.
